According to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Brighton in England, 30 minute dance classes burn more calories than running and swimming. On top of that, in addition to physical benefits, dance improves people’s psychological state as well.

Dr Nick Smeeton, from the University of Brighton, said: ‘Dance not only appears to increase positive and reduce negative emotions, which are typical effects of exercise, but we also found that dancing actually reduced feelings of fatigue too.’ The study was conducted with a group of students between ages 24 and 38.  The 15 dancers from London’s City Academy, took part in a series of dance classes, during which, researchers measured heart rate, distance covered, energy expended and psychological states. They took part in 30-minute sessions of ballet, ballroom, contemporary, salsa, street and swing dance.

Overall, dance is fun and a sustainable way to keep fit and it’s accessible to everyone! Let’s dance and be fit!

World Tango Champions Come to Hudson Dance Studio!

2016 World Tango Salon Champions, Melisa Sacchi and Cristina Palomo, took their expertise from the heart of Argentina to Hudson Dance Studio in Edgewater, New Jersey, when they attended the studio to educate and inspire local Bergen County Tango dancers to grow their passion for dancing and the authentic movements of Argentine Tango.

The Annual World Tango Championship and Festival is an international gathering of the finest dancers in Buenos Aires, the global tango hotspot, which is the birthplace of the popular dance that originated in the city’s working class ports at the turn of the 19th century. This highly regarded event is held in front of an international audience with a stoic panel of Tango judges who keep a sharp eye on every authentic move.

Melisa Sacchi and Cristian Palomo are dedicated to holding true to the art and authenticity of Argentine Tango.  Melisa trained in ballet as a young child and eventually began dancing Tango in 2001. She has spent time under the guidance of many instructors, Milongueros and choreographers.  Then in 2007, she was selected to enter the Academia de Estilos de Tango Argentino (ACETA). Cristian’s love of dance started in 1999 in the ballet folclorico. Coming from a family of folkloric dancers, it was destiny that Cristina would uphold his family’s love of dance and he began dancing Tango in 2003 at the National Institute of Art (IUNA).

Melisa and Cristian met while dancing D’Arienzo at a Milonga in San Telmo.  They joined the Jesus Velazquaz Tango company and went on to teach, and perform in shows and milongas in Buenos Aires. They won the Metropolitan Tango Championship in 2015 and placed FIRST in the World Championship in the Salon category in 2016.

It’s not a secret that THE place for authentic Argetine Tango Dancing connected directly to the heart of Argentina is at Hudson Dance Studio in Bergen County, New Jersey.  People from all over the metropolitan area attend the studio for their countless world class Tango events held all year long under the direction of the studio Artistic Director, Jevgeni Davidov, 2014 and 2018 US Tango Finalist.

To find out more about all the latest events coming straight from Argentina to the United States, contact Hudson Dance Studio at 201-886-8008 or send us an email on our contact tab! Don’t be surprised if you hear Tango music playing when we pick up the phone!

Hudson Dance Studio is US Tango Vice-Champion 2018!

Did you know that 2-time US Argentine Tango Championship Finalists are part of the dance faculty here at Hudson Dance Studio?  That’s right!

Each year, top-notch dancers from all over United States compete at the preliminary Argentine Tango Dance competition, The US Argentine Tango Championship & Festival. They compete in different categories, such as Tango de Pista, Milonga, Senior category, Stage. Finalists in the Salon and Stage categories are officially sent to the semifinals at the Annual World Argentine Tango Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina (Mundial).

Right here in Bergen County, two dancers were practicing passionately and intensely each day in preparation for this national dance festival, and it paid off! Hudson Dance Studio’s Artistic Director, Jevgeni Davidov, and Dance Instructor, Natalia Sidorenco, placed 2nd at the 2018 US Argentine Tango Championship that was held during the Easter weekend in San Francisco, California.

Both of them are passionate about the dance of Argentine Tango, although their paths to this dance were different. Jevgeni has been dancing, teaching and performing Argentine Tango for many years throughout the world, his journey started at the German Theater Dance Academy a decade ago where he was introduced to this dance for the first time. In 2014 he placed 1st in the Stage category with his then student at the US Argentine Tango Championship!

Natalia has been a professional dancer for many years focusing on Jazz, Hip-Hop, Latin, and Ballroom. After moving to the United States from Moldova, she was introduced to the passionate dance of Argentine Tango by Jevgeni Davidov and they began training together only a few months ago at Hudson Dance Studio, Edgewater!

Together, Jevgeni and Natalia represented the world-class instruction that is available in Edgewater New Jersey, right at Hudson Dance Studio.  Both teach weekly Tango classes on Wednesday nights and a monthly Masterclass on the first Saturday of the month for intermediate and advanced levels.

We would like to congratulate all finalists, and especially 1st place in Tango Salon and Milonga that went to Carlos Urrego and Maureen Urrego, and 3rd place that went to Daniel Moreno and Amanda Accica-Moreno from Detroit, Michigan.

In the 2018 Stage category, 1st place went to Michael Thomas and Miki Katherine from Las Vegas, Nevada; 2nd place went to Carlos Urrego and Maureen Urrego from Seattle, Washington; and 3rd place went to Lorenzo Lazure and Anna Radzikowska from Los Angeles, California.

3 Things that Sex and Argentine Tango have in common :-)

Did you know that even the famous sex therapist, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, practices the dance of love, Argentine Tango?  And there’s good reason why!  With a media career starting in the 1980’s on radio and television, and as the author of approximately 40 books on the topic of sex, Dr. Ruth knows where the moves are at that keep passion and stimulation alive! You can see her on the picture hugging and joking with our Artistic Director Jevgeni Davidov at the Chinese Fashiongala in New York City!

There are many things that Sex and Argentine Tango have in common and here’s our top three!

1-   Touch

We all need and want to be touched.  It’s part of the basic human needs of life for emotional health and wellness.  Touch is the basis of all human connection.  By a simple touch, you feel you are not alone, but yet supported by another in this thing we call life!

2-   Communication

Did you know that Argentine Tango is the only dance that is not choreographed? It is based on a series of basic steps and principles and the only way to know where to step next is to listen to your partner’s body language through your mind and body connection.  Now if that is not similar to sex, I don’t know what is?!

3-   Oxytocin

Oxytocin is the #1 reason why you smile! It is a powerful hormone that elevates one’s mood.  The oxytocin levels in your brain increase and are triggered by things related to connection, such as touch and sexual interaction.  So instead of a 2-step, maybe we should call it an oxytocin-step!

At Hudson Dance Studio, we are aware that dance is much more than a series of patterns.  It is an artform that promotes health, wellness and social interaction.  All of these things foster positive human development, wholeness and wellness, and this is the passion that drives us every day to provide a safe place for people to connect and expand the quality of their life.  We hope to see you soon on our dance floor!

Hudson Dance Studio is top pick of New Jersey celebrities!

It's no secret where the stars go for fun! On Season 8 of Real Housewives of New Jersey, Teresa Giudices' close friends, Danielle Staub and Margaret Josephs wanted to show Teresa how to unwind, have fun and spice life up a bit since Teresa expressed being frustrated without her husband at home!  They thought about all the things they could do and figured some hot Latin dancing could do the trick! Out of all the dance studios in New Jersey, they knew there was only one place that could deliver hot, classy, carefree fun with a trendy New York City vibe, overlooking the skyline of Manhattan - Hudson Dance Studio in Edgewater, New Jersey! Not only did they seek us out for our glamour, they also heard that our Award Winning dance studio has a high number of World and US Champion teachers from the Latin & Ballroom department!

Housewifes 2 IMG_9666 copy.jpg

Whether you come to the studio with a partner or on your own, you will learn just like RHONJ stars learned that dancing is a whole lot of fun! After Teresa learned some basic movements from Jevgeni, she cheerfully switched over to Joe and not only taught him how to hold a Latin beat, she also lead him in to an under arm turn!  Hmmm, just like Teresa to take the lead! With big smiles and a good time in their heart, they all learned how to get their Latin on rather quickly!

So for the set up: Danielle and Margaret asked Teresa to meet them at Hudson Dance Studio on River Road in Edgewater, right near Danielle's home, close to the George Washington Bridge.  Their goal was to show Teresa a good time while her husband, Joe Giudice, was stuck in prison.  Both Danielle and Margaret brought their significant others, Marty Caffrey and Joe Benigno, who they partnered with on the dance floor.  Teresa came as a single dancer, but no problem there! She had a great time in the hands of US Argentine Tango Finalist, Jevgeni Davidov. Teresa noted that it had been a long time since she was in the arms of another man and it certainly seemed to have ignited a fire within her!  She felt comfortable, had fun and was pleased to have this connection with a man for a change- even if it was only for an hour!

Screen Shot 2018-03-23 at 11.59.43 AM.png

Accompanied in a group class with other Bergen County dance enthusiasts, Margaret expressed being thrilled to do Latin dancing but was frazzled by the fact that her husband Joe was having a hard time keeping on rhythm with her and his steps reminded her more of Super Mario in a video game, than a sexy atin dancer.  Partner dancing can be hard at times, just like in the life partnership of a man and a woman, but if Joe and Margaret keep it up, they will learn one thing- couples who dance together, stay together! In dance you need to be patient, let your partner fill their role, let the man lead and the lady follow- pretty hard task for a housewife of New Jersey!

After their dance soiree, consisting of Salsa, Cha-Cha, Samba and Rumba basic steps, the Real Housewives spent causal time in the classy setting of Hudson Dance Studio in Edgewater, NJ chatting and catching up on all the latest happenings in their exciting life, while Marty and Joe spent some time learning Argentine Tango from Jevgeni with the other ladies at Hudson Dance Studio!
It's never a dull moment at Hudson Dance Studio, and who knows, you may even see Danielle and Marty learn their wedding dance on our floor now that they are recently engaged!  Stop by and see what makes us Bravo TV's #1 pick!

This scene aired on Bravo TV's RHONJ "Reunion Secrets Revealed", Season 8, Episode 16 on January 31, 2018.

Where Dance meets community…

Hudson Dance Studio: Where Dance Meets Community

ABBY MONTANEZ

At Hudson Dance Studio in Edgewater, dance is considered a lifestyle, and since their opening in 2012, the mission of the studio and artistic director Jevgeni Davidov has been to transform lives through dance, improving every member and student on a physical, emotional, and social level. “It’s a great opportunity for social contact. You can come to relax, detach from your cellphone or work, and enjoy the person-to-person contact. I tell my students it’s like learning a new language, a nonverbal one of course.” The studio offers classes ranging from Salsa, Bachata, Cha Cha, Swing, Lindy Hop and Argentine Tango, all of which are taught by expert dance instructors that Davidov chooses himself. You can sign up for private lessons, group classes, master workshops, or even join in on competitions, all levels of experience are welcomed.

Davidov himself grew up in Russia, and started his Latin and Ballroom career at the age of five, performing in numerous competitions throughout Russia and Germany. In 2014, he was named the U.S. Argentine Tango National Stage Champion and he has been combining the world of competitive, sport, and social dance ever since. “There are many reasons for people to start dancing. I like to summarize those with the words: fun, fitness, friendship and romance. Dance is a great hobby to have; it is a fun way to escape your daily stress and routine. Besides learning a new skill, you also connect with others and develop friendships. Learning to dance is not a competition, but simple, fun and improvisational. It focuses on being social as supposed to impressing others. Dance makes you happy, overall.” The studio serves as a creative outlet, one that can help in relieving stress, a place to channel your energy and even pick up a new hobby. Aside from adults, students also range from children and teens who can learn Ballet, Jazz, Latin, Ballroom and Hip Hop.

Larissa Nowak

Manager of Hudson Dance Studio, Ksenia Jung weighed in on how incorporating dance into your life can affect and benefit you outside of the ballroom. “We want dance to become a part of your routine. It’s something that’ll leave you feeling great, and bring positivity to all other aspects of your life. It teaches you how to overcome your fears, to set goals and meet them, and can even improve your relationships with family, friends, and more importantly yourself. It’s a huge confidence booster.”

IMG_7148.jpg

Part of what makes Hudson Dance Studio so special, aside from its spacious interior and Manhattan views, are the people and passion behind it. The studio offers a free introductory lesson for first time students, a private one-on-one session with an instructor who will evaluate and accommodate your needs, skill level, and direct you to which classes in the future would be best suited for you. Every Tuesday night at the studio, there is a Latin and Ballroom dance party with workshops from 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. and then a party which includes staff from 8:30 p.m. until 10 p.m., and every Wednesday night, there is “Milonga on the Hudson”, which is an Argentine Tango party that is run like parties in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Davidov believes that bringing everyone together, from members to instructors, is the key to forming relationships and building a dance community.

And now back to dancing … Think about it, have you ever seen a sad person dancing?
Usually the mood is one of joy, happiness and elevation, and here’s why!

A 2003 study by New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine verifies
dancing’s ability to increase blood flow to the brain with activities that
include memorizing complex steps, staying with the rhythm of music and
working with a partner.  This study credits dancing’s social interaction with
decreasing stress and depression. The Mayo Clinic also released a study
on the heath benefits of dance and reported that self-confidence and
self-discipline come right along with enhanced circulation, muscle tone
and coordination.

IMG_6482.jpg

So why not?  At Hudson Dance Studio you will find social dancers of all
levels who simply look for a place to let loose, be free and enjoy the carefree
whimsical element of dance with others who value it’s health benefits as well.
